We get lots of requests to go up into the lantern room. But unfortunately it is not safe for visitors to do so. The lantern and lens are original. Repairs were made following the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. However, it is now possible to get to the room just below the lantern room and look up through a window to see the lens and light.
View from 89 feet above sea level at the level of the light.
Electricity is much cleaner than whale oil. Cleaning
needs to be done once every two-three months.
This image shows lenses missing since the 1906 earthquake.
These are towards the back and do not affect visibility at sea.
